While I’m not into the blame game, we can’t ignore the irresponsible corporate and govt practices that led to 600 people falling ill and 8 dieing across 43 states from Salmonella-contaminated peanut butter. FDA hadn’t inspect the Peanut Corp of America plant in GA since 2001 and at that time it was a mess, with insect sitings, insecticide use, holes for rodents to come and go, and management asleep at the wheel. While its not a nuclear power plant, a PB factory that supplies food product to this much of the free world needs to be treated as a major public health threat, even a national security threat - if the wrong thing happens. FDA found issues and didn’t go back for 8 years and the result is 600 ill, 8 dead and a PB scare that is wrecking the industry - sales down 25%. Things obviously need to change. First daughter Sasha likes PB, the president notes, and he doesn’t want to worry over her Salmonella safety. He is promising a full review of FDA inspections and is getting closer to appointing a new chief of this failing agency. Here’s the latest list of PB products recalled.
